Jennifer Liu, a Partner of Katz Banks Kumin, joined the firm in 2023 and serves as the co-Managing Partner of the firm’s California Office.

Ms. Liu is a nationally recognized litigator in employment discrimination and wage and hour class actions. She also represents individuals in litigation and negotiations in all areas of employment law. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ms. Liu frequently represents executives and other professionals in the technology, financial services, and healthcare industries.

Ms. Liu has been named one of the Best Lawyers in America by Best Lawyers in America in 2020, 2021, and 2022. She has also been named a Benchmark Litigation Labor and Employment Star, a ranking of the preeminent labor and employment litigation practitioners in the U.S. She has also been recognized by the Daily Journal as one of the Top 75 Labor and Employment Lawyers in California Lawyers in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023, and a Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiff Employment Lawyer from 2020 through 2023. She has also been named a Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers Magazine from 2021 to 2023, and was previously named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers from 2017 to 2020.

Ms. Liu is an active member of the legal community and frequently speaks and publishes on employment law issues. She is a Board Member for the Center for WorkLife Law, an advocacy and research organization that seeks to advance racial, gender, and class equity. She has held numerous leadership positions with the ABA Section of Labor & Employment Law, including serving as Employee Co-Chair of the Committee on Equal Employment Law and Employee Vice Chair for the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession Committee, and Employee Co-Chair for the Flash e-Newsletter Committee.  She has also served as an editor for numerous publications and treatises, including the treatise Employment Discrimination Law (Lindemann, Grossman, & Weirich), and Zero Tolerance: Best Practices for Combating Sex-Based Harassment in the Legal Profession (ABA Commission on Women in the Profession).

Prior to joining Katz Banks Kumin, Ms. Liu was the founding partner of The Liu Law Firm, P.C., which she founded in 2015, and Liu Peterson-Fisher LLP, which she co-founded in 2021. Ms. Liu also served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable John G. Koeltl of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Harvard University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and she earned her J.D./M.B.A. from Stanford Law School and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Before attending law and business school, Ms. Liu worked as an equity research analyst for Janus Capital Group, an investment management firm. She has successfully completed Levels I, II, and III of the Chartered Financial Analyst program.

Ms. Liu is admitted to practice in the states of California and New York, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Southern Districts of California, and the Eastern District of Michigan.

Nationwide Class Action Settlement for $13 Million
Katz Banks Kumin partners Jennifer Liu and Rebecca Peterson-Fisher serve as lead counsel in a nationwide class action in which the plaintiffs obtained a $13.1 million settlement for a nationwide class of hourly workers.

Coleman v. Stitch Fix
Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu represents a nationwide class of hourly employees who worked as stylists for Stitch Fix, an online personal styling service. The case is currently proceeding as a class arbitration.

Borrego v. Raley’s
Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu served as lead counsel in Borrego v. Raley’s, a pregnancy discrimination class action brought on behalf of current and former Raley’s supermarket workers in California. The Superior Court of California, County of Sacramento, granted approval of a $2.8 million settlement in the case.

The case was brought in Sacramento County Superior Court in April 2015 on behalf of two named plaintiffs and a proposed class of current and former employees of Raley’s supermarkets who alleged they were denied reasonable accommodations for their pregnancies. The lead plaintiff, Lucianna Borrego, worked for Raley’s in Ukiah, California. Kirsten Kelly, the second named plaintiff, worked at a Bel Air market in the Sacramento region. Both plaintiffs claimed they were placed on leave when they sought accommodations relating to their pregnancies.

Raley’s denied any liability or wrongdoing and believed it would have prevailed in this case. However, the company said it entered into the settlement agreement to minimize the expense and distraction associated with litigation. [Read more….]

Quinby v. ULTA
Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu served as Class Counsel in the statewide wage and hour class action brought on behalf of general managers who worked in the defendant’s California beauty supply stores. Class Counsel obtained a class action settlement on behalf of the plaintiffs of $3.65 million.

Galbraith v. Drybar
Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu served as Class Counsel in this statewide wage and hour class action on behalf of general managers who worked in the defendant’s California hair salons. Class Counsel obtained a class action settlement on behalf of the plaintiffs of $1.0 million.

Pena v. U.S. Bancorp
Along with leading national class action firm Lieff Cabraser Heimann and Bernstein, Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu served as Class Counsel in this statewide wage and hour class action on behalf of hourly employees who worked in the defendant’s California bank branches. Class Counsel obtained a class action settlement on behalf of the plaintiffs of $2.5 million.

Jones v. memoryBlue, Inc.
Along with leading wage and hour class action firm Werman Salas, Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu served as Class Counsel in this nationwide class and collective action on behalf of sales representatives who worked for the defendant, a lead generation company. Class Counsel obtained a class and collective action settlement on behalf of the plaintiffs of $2.55 million.

Nationwide Wage and Hour Class Action Settlement Against Home Security Company for $2 Million
Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu represented a class of employees who worked for a national home security company in a wage and hour class action that resulted in a settlement of $2.0 million.

Teruel v. American Canyon Fire Protection District
In this caregiver discrimination case, Katz Banks Kumin partners Jennifer Liu and Rebecca Peterson-Fisher represented Carlo Teruel, a veteran firefighter-paramedic and father who was terminated after he took approved time off to care for his wife and sons when they were suffering from illnesses. On Teruel’s behalf, Liu and Peterson-Fisher brought claims against the District for retaliation for using sick leave in violation of the California Kin Care Act, and for illegal sex stereotyping in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act.  Teruel’s case settled for $312,000.

Alcala / City and County of San Francisco
Katz Banks Kumin partner Jennifer Liu represented Diane Alcala, a marriage and family counselor who worked for the City and County of San Francisco. Alcala, a gender non-conforming woman, alleged that the City and County discriminated against her on the basis of her gender expression, as well as national origin, and then retaliated against her by terminating her after she made a complaint about the discriminatory behavior. Alcala’s case settled for $225,000.
