Katz Banks Kumin partner Debra Katz was interviewed for an NBC News segment on the report that Representative John Conyers settled with a former staffer, who claimed that she was fired for refusing his sexual advances.

Like almost all cases of sexual harassment in Congress, Conyer’s victim was likely forced to sign an ironclad non-disclosure agreement.

“The way that these agreements are written require people never to speak of the incident again, never to talk about the settlement again, and never to disparage the member,” explains Ms. Katz.

This process serves to protect the institution and its members, and does little to protect against future incidents.
