Debra Katz Calls for Congressional Whistleblower Protections in USA Today Editorial

November 19, 2015

Katz Banks Kumin partner Debra S. Katz published an editorial today in USA Today which she co-authored with Danielle Brian calling on Congress to pass meaningful whistleblower protections for its employees.  As Ms. Katz points out, while anti-retaliation protections for whistleblowers have become increasingly commonplace in many different industries across the country, no such protections exist for employees within the legislative branch of the U.S. government.  Ms. Katz noted that “[t]he principles that guide these whistleblower protections apply with equal or greater force to the legislature itself,” particularly because “[a]buses of power within the legislative branch impact taxpayer spending, the effectiveness of democracy and erode public trust in government.”  Ms. Katz called on Congress to follow the recommendations of its own Office of Compliance – as well as the bipartisan group of lawmakers calling for such protections – to extend whistleblower protections to its own employees.
